The Ugears Mechanical Aquarium is an ingenious saltwater aquarium, with two pet tropical fish chasing each other around a forest of macroalgae fronds, inside which another small marine inhabitant – a seahorse! The beauty, variety, and intrigue of saltwater fish farming make it one of the most popular pastimes in the world. Maybe you‘re a diving or snorkeling enthusiast, and you‘d like to remember your underwater adventures when you dived into a colorful reef or explored a kelp forest. Building Ugears‘ unique and charming wooden models, brain teasers, and 3D puzzles has become a popular pastime for thousands of people in 85 countries on five continents. Now you can combine these hobbies in one model!
Not only is this DIY aquarium model kit, with its original theme and design, a beautiful addition to the Ugears catalog, but it also features a unique mechanical action. The fish and algae rotate simultaneously and in parallel, at different speeds and in different directions, simulating the gentle and undulating rhythms of underwater plant and animal life. Elegant fish look like they’re actually swimming when they move their heads and tails from side to side. The Mechanical Aquarium model is unique in that, while many Ugears models are powered by rubber band motors, the Aquarium is spring–operated, for longer action and greater longevity. At Ugears, we pride ourselves on innovating and listening to our loyal customers, many of whom have asked for models with spring mechanisms. We are proud to present this spring aquarium, a first in our growing catalog of Ugears models!
To set the model in motion, turn the knob under the aquarium about 25 half turns, toggle the switch from “STOP“ to “SWIM“ mode, and then watch your mechanical aquarium come to life! The mechanism contains an internal pendulum to regulate and soften the movement. We designed this model to be the very definition of simple operation for users: one switch, two modes: on and off. You can stop the model at any time, or just let it go and enjoy the movements of the fish and leaves from the automaton for about 40 seconds.Did you know that the ancient Romans and Aztecs had rudimentary saltwater aquariums? (Those of the Aztecs were much larger.) In 1846, British marine zoologist Anna Thynne created and maintained the first ecologically balanced marine aquarium over a three–year period, taking inspiration from the London Zoo‘s Fish House seven years later. It wasn‘t until a century later, in the 1950s, that saltwater aquariums as a personal hobby really took off. Due to the need to periodically replenish aquariums with fresh seawater, most early hobbyists lived near the ocean. Saltwater aquariums have always required the hobbyist to purchase a number of associated equipment, including filtration, aeration, and lighting systems. Over the years, the aesthetics and technologies associated with saltwater aquariums have advanced: bleached corals have given way to living rocks and coral species, water quality testing has been improved, temperature control systems have been perfected, commercial captive breeding and coral propagation have reduced removals from vulnerable marine environments, and we better understand the interconnectedness of species.
Not everyone is able to handle the challenges or expenses of installing and maintaining a saltwater aquarium. Even a basic aquarium for beginners represents a substantial and continuous investment of time and resources. But with the Ugears Mechanical Aquarium, you can dive into the fascinating underwater world with an attractive and whimsical wooden model that you can build yourself and then display proudly. Once the model is assembled, your family and friends will have hours of fun watching the automaton fish realistically swim around their wooden bowls, while occasionally peeking through the fronds at the secret seahorse. And you‘ll never need to test or change the water! At Ugears, we strive to combine beautiful design with surprising mechanical action, in order to charm and delight our customers. We think you‘ll agree that we‘ve achieved this with this beautiful mechanical aquarium. With Ugears, there‘s always an extra touch of fantasy, embodied in this model by the seahorse hidden in the center. Part of our core mission is to bring people together, especially across generations, to build and play with our unique mechanical wonders. Make the mechanical aquarium your next family project!
The mechanical aquarium has 325 parts, is classified at the “average“ level and its assembly time is estimated at 6 hours.
